Gerard K. Stewart, age 92, of Wethersfield, died peacefully on October 4, 2015. Gerard was born in Hartford on August 20, 1923. He graduated from Wethersfield High School in 1941 and went on to the Merchant Marines. When he was discharged from the Merchant Marines he was drafted into the Army and transferred to the Navy, where he was honorably discharged on March 2,1955. He attended Kings Point Merchant Marine Academy. He had a successful career as a Vice President of Investments and retired in 1999. Gerard was a family man who always put his family first. He was married to Virginia on November 22, 1957; sharing 57 years together. They have two daughters, two grandchildren and two grand puppies; Deborah Karsmarski and her husband, James, of Rocky Hill, Karen Lemaire and husband, Mark, of Wethersfield; his grandchildren Samuel and Abigail Lemaire; and his special grand puppies, Chingo Lemaire and Chanel Karsmarski; as well as his brother-in-law, Royal Larson, of Whidbey Island, Washington. In addition he leaves nieces, nephews, cousins and godchildren. Gerard’s parents, Norman W. and Mary Stewart and his brother Norman Stewart preceded him in death. He was a social and active man who was deeply involved in many activities during his life. He joined the Wethersfield Country Club and was an honorary member and the oldest member in service having joined in 1942. Gerard was President of the Club in 1976-1977. In addition he served as Chairman of the Golf and Grounds Committee as well as the Invitation Tournament. He served on the History Committee in preparation for the 2016 centennial celebration of the club. Gerard was a past co-chairman of the Insurance City Open, now known as the Traveler’s Open, in 1955, when Sam Snead won the tournament. In 1955 when co-chairman of the ICO Gerard founded the Connecticut Golf Hall of Fame. He administered the selection and induction of honorees together with the Connecticut Sports Writer’s Alliance for over 20 years. He remained active in the Past Co-Chairman’s Association and during the years at Wethersfield Country Club drove Bob Hope in the cart for the Pro-Am. He was a past member of the Hartford Jaycees. Gerard was a volunteer fire fighter with the Wethersfield Fire Department, Company 2, retiring after 33 years of dedicated service, at which time Gerard became an Associate Member of Co. 2 and the Department. In his youth he was part of a baseball team that played the prisoners in the Wethersfield State Prison. He was President of the Wethersfield BMCA. Gerard also was a member and served as President of the First School Society and the Village Cemetery Association in Wethersfield for many years. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion. In 2010 he was awarded the Secretary of State’s Korean War Veteran Public Service Award. On Veteran’s Day, 2014 he was presented with the Quilt of Valor at the Iwo Jima Memorial celebration. Gerard was an original member of the Camp Crud group where he enjoyed camping along the river in Kent, Connecticut for many years. He enjoyed playing golf, vacationing on the Cape every summer with his family and friends, and being a supporter of his children and grandchildren’s activities. His family and friends will always remember him as kind, humble and supportive. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, October 10, 2015 at 10am in Sacred Heart Church, 56 Hartford Ave. Wethersfield, attendees are asked to go directly to the church. Interment, with full military honors, will follow the Mass in Village Cemetery (Olson section), Marsh St. Old Wethersfield. Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, 34 Beaver Rd. Wethersfield, has been entrusted with Mr. Stewart’s funeral arrangements. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given to Iwo Jima Memorial Historical Foundation P.O.
