Obituary for Bertha Mary Keenan (Molak)

Bertha Mary (Molak) Keenan, 92, of Wethersfield, passed away after a brief illness on Sunday, December 28, at Hartford Hospital. Born in Central Falls, RI, she graduated as a Registered Nurse from the Boston City Hospital School of Nursing. While a student nurse, she helped care for victims of the 1942 Boston Cocoanut Grove fire, which was captured in a photo in Life magazine. Bertha met her husband Tom in Rhode Island while he was attending Providence College. They were married for sixty-five years. Bertha served for a short time as a nurse in the U. S. Army during World War II and then returned home to care for her mother. She was a nurse at Hartford Hospital for thirty-five years and has been a resident of Old Wethersfield for 56 years. Bertha is survived by her husband, Thomas and her children, Dr. Kathleen Bucholz (Dr. Richard Bucholz) of St. Louis MO, Attorney Margaret Keenan (Michele Long) of Randolph, MA, Thomas Keenan Jr. (Helena) of Greensboro, NC and her sister, Rose Pianka, of Providence, RI. She also leaves five grandchildren, Dr. Elizabeth Bucholz (David Rasch), Dr. Eleanor Bucholz (Alexander Faught), Ethan Bucholz (Catherine), Lucy and Joey Keenan and three great-grandchildren, Clayton, Austin and Genevieve Rasch, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was a devout Catholic who attended mass daily, an avid bridge player, and a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Memories of playing Shanghai, celebrating graduations and weddings, and countless vacations will console us as we mourn her passing. There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Sacred Heart Church, 56 Hartford Avenue Wethersfield, CT 06109 at 10 AM on Saturday, January 3, 2015. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Bertha's name may be made to the Sacred Heart Church building fund. Bertha’s funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, 34 Beaver Rd., Wethersfield.
