Obituary for Joseph Gilman "Gil" Rossignol

Print
Gilman Joseph Rossignol has died peacefully at home after a long life as a devoted husband and father. A gentle man of good heart. He was 90 years old.
He grew up in Northern Maine where he was a star basketball player for the little Patten Academy basketball team that as Maine State Champions beat Boston Latin in the Boston Garden in the New England scholastic tournament of 1947. That sports legend was told around the world and memorialized in the Maine Basketball Hall of Fame. A gifted and handsome athlete he was known in the sports pages as “good-looking Gil.”
He worked at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft 40 years. He was married for more than 70 years to Joyce Hall Rossignol, his high school sweetheart. The Rossignols lived in East Hartford, Ellington and for many years in Wethersfield.
Most of all he loved and was loved by his family: his children Mary Zabilansky and her husband Donald of Huntersville, N.C., James Rossignol, East Hartford; Harry Rossignol and his wife Claudia Riley of Issaquah, Washington, and Sarah Rossignol of Rocky Hill.
He enjoyed his grandchildren. He was the world’s best hugger though he never let any of them beat him at miniature golf, backyard croquet or bowling or in card games of 63 if he had a good partner. The grandchildren are: Bonnie Zabilansky, Michael Zabilansky, Dana Zabilansky and Krista Cannon and her children Addie and Sydney Cannon; Joanne Rossignol, Suzanne Rossignol, Amy Rossignol and Billy Rossignol who died at 25 in a motorcycle accident in Thailand in 2014; and Jen Cantin and her husband Adam Linder, Michelle Cantin and Michael Cantin.
He enjoyed his neighbors Henry and Gloria Levine, Josephine Orsini, Gwynne Skehan and her sons, and the Marchettini family. He was grateful to and fond of his caregivers especially Karen Davis, Karen Peccoo and Esmin Wallen who were with him in his final years.
He was predeceased by his parents Donat and Ida Rossignol of Maine and Glastonbury, his sister Laura White Maruffi of Glastonbury: and his brother Clarence Rossignol of Kezar Falls, Maine.
There are no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, October 17, 2018 at 10am in The Church of the Incarnation, 544 Prospect St., Wethersfield. Burial will follow the Mass in Village Cemetery, Marsh St., Wethersfield. Joseph’s funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, Wethersfield.
