Robert V. McCarthy, 86, husband of the late Barbara McCarthy, passed away March 25, 2018 in New Port Richey, FL. He was born in Woonsocket, RI, the youngest of three children born to the late Edward and Esther (Coffey) McCarthy. He is predeceased by his brother, Edward McCarthy of Pennsylvania and survived by his sister, Louise McCarthy of Woonsocket, RI. After the passing of his mother Esther, he was raised by his second mother, Mary Monahan who was a highly influential and positive role model in his life. Robert was an active member in the St. Charles Church community in Woonsocket where he served as an alter boy and was a graduate of Mount St. Charles High School. He went on to attend Providence College where he received his bachelor’s degree. During the Korean Conflict he served in the U.S. Army and was stationed at Fort Dix, New Jersey. In 1955 he married his highschool sweetheart, Barbara and his teaching career took him from Rhode Island to Connecticut where he earned his Masters and 6th year certificate in Education at the University of Connecticut. Robert taught at numerous schools throughout Connecticut and in 1969 he settled in Wethersfield to raise his family. He spent the rest of his career as an employee for the Wethersfield Board of Education where he earned the title of “Mr. McCarthy” and served as Principal at Emerson-Williams Elementary, Highcrest Elementary and Charles Wright Elementary School. In private, Robert was an avid golfer, reader, investor, world traveler and poet. On any given weekend he could be found playing a round of golf as a member of Wethersfield Country Club and on school vacations he could be found in South America, Africa, China, India, Mongolia and even base camp at Mount Everest in Nepal. After retiring, he and Barbara moved to Florida where he continued his passion for reading, investing and writing poems to his wife and best friend of 60 years. Robert is best remembered for being a wonderful, ambitious, loving father and brother who was an advocate for and friend to all.
Robert is also survived by his daughters, Kathleen McCarthy of Wolcott, Brigid McCarthy-Madar and her husband Richard Madar of Milford and and his two grandchildren, Megan and Sarah Patulak who affectionately referred to him as “Bobby”.
