Obituary for James A. "Jim" Droney

James Augustine Droney, 89, of Newington passed away peacefully Saturday, March 10, 2018 surrounded by family. Born in Bellharbour, County Clare, Ireland, he was the son of the late James and Mary Ann (Kerins) Droney. Jim immigrated to the United States in 1947 with his cousin Jack Droney, turning age 19 on the trip. He arrived in New York and moved to the Hartford, Connecticut area. Jim connected with the local Irish community by joining the Irish American Home Society of which he was a proud member and an active officer and director of for 70 years. The Irish home was a special place in his life and he met “his Waterloo” there, his beloved bride, Noreen Martin, whom he married on June 18, 1960. He worked tirelessly his whole life, working the family farm in Ireland until he left for America. After serving in the National Guard, Jim worked 42 years at the Travelers Insurance Company, retiring in 1988 only to start a seven-year career at St. Joseph’s College in West Hartford.
He was predeceased by his wife Noreen. Jim is survived by his children, James and his wife Diane Droney of Suffield, Brendan and his wife Lynn Droney of Wethersfield, Mary Ann Droney and Scott Ladden of Coventry, and Kathleen (Droney) O’Neil and her husband Michael of Marlborough. He is also survived by ten grandchildren, Emily (Droney) Abramowitz and her husband Michael of East Granby, Madeline Droney of Stratford, James M., Jack and Maeve Droney of Suffield, Clare and Grace Droney of Wethersfield, and Christopher, Mary Grace, and Maeve O’Neil of Marlborough. Jim also has a great-granddaughter Elizabeth Abramowitz with whom he shares a birthday.
He also leaves his three brothers, Frank Droney and John Droney of West Hartford, and Chris Droney of Bellharbour County Clare Ireland. He also leaves behind many friends, relatives and neighbors including his brother in law John Ashe of Newington with whom he was especially close. Jim was predeceased by his brother, Patrick Joseph Droney, and a grandson Keith Droney.
Friends may call on Wednesday March 14, 2018 from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at the Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, 34 Beaver Road, Wethersfield.The funeral will be held on Thursday March 15, 2018 at 9:15 am from the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am in Holy Spirit Church of the Annunciation Parish, 183 Church St., Newington, CT. Burial will be in West Meadow Cemetery, 679 Willard Ave., Newington. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Irish American Home Society Scholarship Fund, PO Box 620, 132 Commerce St., Glastonbury, CT 06033.
