Obituary for Johanna M. "Hanni" Weed (Troschke)

Johanna (“Hanni”) M. Weed, a resident of Avery Heights, Hartford since 2010 passed peacefully on January 19, 2018 after a long battle with emphysema. She was the beloved wife for 51 years of the late Edward L. (“Eddie”) Weed.
Johanna was born in Germany on May 30,1933, the daughter of the late Erhard Troschke and Gertrude (Wegner) Troschke. Following her graduation from Bethanien Teacher College she taught Kindergarten in Berlin.
In 1954 she moved to the United States of America to marry Eddie. Following Ed’s service in the US Army, Ed and Johanna moved to Norwich, CT, and Johanna became an assistant Art teacher at Norwich Free Academy (NFA) and also taught German during summer school.
After moving to Sound Beach on Long Island, Johanna earned her B.A. degree from Dowling College, and her Masters degree from Adelphi University. She taught Physical Education at the Miller Place Primary School until 1988. Johanna always loved teaching her little first and second graders.
During the summer she and her family spent many happy and relaxing hours at the beach in their neighborhood (Scott’s Beach). Johanna enjoyed gardening, sewing, reading, and going dancing with Eddie.
After her retirement in 1988, she and Eddie enjoyed traveling, dining, and relaxing at Scott’s Beach. Most of all she enjoyed the visits from her sons, their wives, and her grandchildren. Her grandchildren particularly enjoyed going to “Oma’s ice-cream parlor”. After Ed’s death, her health worsened and in 2010 she moved up to Avery Heights in Hartford, CT to be closer to her sons.
Johanna is survived by her son Doug Weed and his wife Amy, by her son Bruce Weed and his wife Jeannine, and her three grandchildren, Melissa, Allison, and Shelby Weed. She is survived by two sisters-in-law, Ruth Szabo and Edna Logan. She was pre-deceased by her sisters Rose Querry and Katie McSween.
Hanni showed great strength, persistence and fortitude in handling the challenges presented by her emphysema over the past 15 years. She had a positive attitude, and lived life to the fullest.
Our family would like to thank the entire staff and community of Avery Heights for the outstanding care, friendship, and support you provided to Johanna over the past seven plus years. She was always so appreciative of being part of the wonderful Avery Heights family. We would also like to thank the staff of Bliss 11 Step-down Unit at Hartford Hospital for the high-quality care and compassion you provided for Johanna when she was in the hospital.
In accordance with her wishes, a memorial service will be held to celebrate Johanna’s life in the next few weeks at Avery Heights. Johanna’s ashes will be interred at an interment ceremony in Calverton National Cemetery, L.I.N.Y. to join her beloved husband Ed at a later date.
In lieu of Flowers, donations may be made to Avery Heights, Hartford Hospital, or Mather Hospital (Port Jefferson, N.Y.). The Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, Wethersfield has care of the arrangements. To extend online condolences and/or share a memory, please visit farleysullivan.com.
