Condolence From: Ed Grace, DVM
Condolence: My condolences to the family of Dr. van der Heide. I had him as a professor (Virology) in the early 80's and, although the class was large, he had a special way of connecting with students with his kindness, sincerity, and humor. I am grateful for the foundation of learning he provided which proved so valuable to me in Vet School and beyond. He similarly affected hundreds of other UConn students on who's behalf I express our gratitude and our condolences.

Condolence: Louis and Svend were great colleagues and friends. Svend and I often enjoyed dinner at their house, and as a Dutchman and a Dane they particularly enjoyed each others company. Svend passed away in February, but I still have wonderful memories of the two of them together. All my good wishes to your family. Caroline

Condolence: Our condolence s to all the van der Heide family...and what a wonderful family you are! We remember Louis as a very kind and thoughtful neighbor. We looked forward to joining him occasionally, as he took his daily walk around the neighborhood. No matter what the weather, Louis would be out there, determined to get some exercise. It was a challenge to keep up with his "giant stride" but worth the effort as we chatted about interesting topics. We miss him.

Condolence: I have very fond memories of Louis from the many service trips we took together and meetings we presented at.There are very few people who could study a problem situation with poultry and develop a solution, as well as Louis could. More importantly, the kind and caring way he dealt with people was what brought the solution to fruition. Louis was a true gentleman and a good friend....

Condolence: My deepest condolences to the van der Heide family. I had the privilege of having Louis for a professor in 1974 where we affectionately referred to him as the gentle giant. I continued my relationship with Louis for another 34 years when I went to work for the CT department of agriculture. He was a true gentleman with a patient demeanor and a kind heart. One of those people you never forget.

Condolence: My sincere Sympathy. As a long-time public relations director at UConn, I always enjoyed working with Louis. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was very patient about explaining his work to a non-scientist. What a wonderful man.
