Dr. Louis  van der Heide, DVM
Dr. Louis van der Heide, DVM, PhD, of Columbia, CT, passed away on Monday, May 5, 2014 in Ridgewood, NJ. He was born in Aerdenhout, Holland, son of the late Dr. Ir. Louis van der Heide and Jo Maartens. Louis, a kind-hearted man, admired by many, was a loving father and friend. He devoted his life to his family and Veterinary medicine, where his work in avian disease research was internationally recognized. Louis spent over 20 years at the University of Connecticut, Department of Pathobiology. He was predeceased by his wife of 51 years, Ingrid (Klaje) van der Heide. Louis is survived by two daughters, Marjolein Rust of La Jolla CA, Ilje Allsup and her husband Brett, of Portland OR; two sons, Mike van der Heide of Portland OR, and Pieter van der Heide and his wife Kate Armstrong, of Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ; 11 grandchildren Nicole, Lauren, Austin, Erik, Ian, Caroline, Danielle, Luke, Annie, Ruby and Delia, a great-grandchild, Teagan; as well as his brother Theo of Holland. In addition to his wife and parents, Louis was predeceased by two brothers, Cleem and Kees. Friends and relatives may call on the family Monday, May 12, 2014 from 4-7pm, at Farley Sullivan Funeral Home, 34 Beaver Rd, Wethersfield, CT 06109. A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating Louis’s life, will be Tuesday, May 13, 2014 at 10am in Corpus Christi Church, 601 Silas Deane Hwy, Wethersfield, CT 06109. Interment will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery (Section 1), corner of Hebron Ave. and Wickham Rd., Glastonbury, CT 06033. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Louis' name to the Alzheimer's Association , 2075 Silas Deane Hwy, Suite 100, Rocky Hill, Ct 06067.
