Obituary for Anna P. Hanko (Pitrus)

Print
Anna (Pitrus) Hanko, 102, peacefully passed away September 22, 2018 at Hartford Hospital after a brief illness. She was born in Willimantic to the late Joseph and Pauline (Brzostecki) Pitrus on July 22, 1916.

Anna grew up in Hartford and lived in Wethersfield for over 64 years, moving to Newington in 2017. She worked as a manager at the luncheonette at J.J. Newberry’s in downtown Hartford in the 1930’s and during the 1940’s she was supervisor of the Hamilton Standard cafeteria where she met her husband, Charles. They were married in Hartford at SS. Cyril & Methodius Church in April 1947.

Anna graduated from Hartford Public High School in 1935 and attended the New York Institute of Dietetics. In Wethersfield, she was a volunteer for 12 years for the Friendly Visitor Program, a past member of the Wethersfield Grange, and she was a Polish language interpreter for the Wethersfield Police Department. Anna was also a member of the Golden Seniors Club of SS. Cyril & Methodius Church, was a member of the Alpha Mates, the Women’s Auxiliary of the U.S. Power Squadron in New London, and was a volunteer in cooperative charting for the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Anna had a humorous side and was always ready to share a new (or old!) joke! Anna loved to kid with you and her antics got anyone laughing! She could also mesmerize you with her stories over the many years of her life to hear about her family, friends and events over her 100 plus years. Her mind stayed sharp and was always well informed on the latest world news, the Red Sox or UCONN Women’s Basketball. She loved to listen to her radio late at night and hear the talk shows from distance stations.

Anna was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Hanko, as well as her brother and sister-in-law, John and Kathleen Pitrus. She is survived by her son, Edward and his wife, Kristine, of West Hartford. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Jacqueline of Springfield, MA; Christine of Boston, MA; Matthew and his wife, Christine, of South Windsor; and Michael of East Hartford, as well as many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Her loved ones will truly miss her.

The family wishes to thank her many neighbors in Wethersfield, who over the years looked out for her with their caring and loving actions. Also, many thanks to her friends and staff at Cedar Mountain Commons for making her recent stay enjoyable.

Friends and relatives may call on the family Thursday morning, September 27, 2018 from 9:30 – 10:30 AM at the Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, 34 Beaver Road, Wethersfield, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrating Anna’s life at 11:00 AM in SS. Cyril & Methodius Church, 63 Popieluszko Court, Hartford. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her memory to SS. Cyril & Methodius Church, Restoration Fund, 55 Charter Oak Avenue, Hartford, CT 06114. To extend online condolences and/or share a memory, please visit farleysullivan.com
