Obituary for Mary Veronica Sweeney (Deveneau)

Mary Veronica (Deveneau) Sweeney of Wethersfield passed away June 20, 2018. She was predeceased by her longtime sweetheart and beloved husband, Attorney James Martin “Marty” Sweeney, on January 13, 2007. Born in Hartford on April 20, 1923, daughter of the late Peter and Mary (Lowe) Deveneau, Mary graduated from Immaculate Conception School and Mount St. Joseph Academy. During WWII, Mary was an evening Nurse’s Aide at Hartford Hospital. She was with the Catholic Transcript until she married Marty in 1946, when he returned from service with the Army Air Corps. After her children were grown, Mary was employed by the Department of Youth Services, Town of Wethersfield, for many years. She was a member of the Corpus Christi Women’s Club, having served as President, and a parish representative for St. Agnes Home. Mary’s true joy was in the love of her family - her grandchildren were her sunshine. She is survived by three devoted daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Veronica and Frank L. Sena, Rita-Ann and Brent M. Owen, and Cynthia Marie and Dean A. DesRosier, all of Wethersfield; her grandchildren, Holly Sena and her husband Jeffrey Goldschmidt of West Hartford, Katherine (Sena) and her husband Todd Namnoun, of Glastonbury, Carolyn Owen of Wethersfield, Sean Owen and his wife Amy Owen, of Mt. Holly Springs, PA, Jeffrey DesRosier and his wife Alyssa, of Fairfield, and Jacqueline DesRosier of Los Angeles, CA. Mary also leaves her great-grandson Max Sena-Goldschmidt and soon to be born great-grandchild Baby Namnoun, as well as her sisters-in-law Norma (Heslin) Sweeney and Patricia (Sweeney) Coughlin; many dearly loved cousins, nieces, nephews and friends; and her companion, Buddy the cat. She was predeceased by her sister and brother-in-law, Monica and William O’Rourke, her sister Rita L. Deveneau, and her cat Danny. Mary’s family would like to thank the staff at Cedar Mountain Commons and her caregivers, especially her hospice nurse, Wioletta, for their compassionate care. Main St, West Hartford, CT 06117. Friends may call on Sunday July 1, 2018 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at the Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, 34 Beaver Rd. Wethersfield, CT 06109. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday July 2, 2018 at 10:00 am in the Church of the Incarnation, 544 Prospect St, Wethersfield. All attendees are asked to go directly to church.
