Obituary for Elizabeth "Betty" Griffin (Kielty)

Elizabeth "Betty" Griffin (Kielty)
Elizabeth J. “Betty” Griffin, 79, of Glastonbury, loving wife to the late Thomas J. “Tom” Griffin, peacefully passed away Monday, April 16, 2018 in St. Francis Hospital with her family at her side. Betty was born April 8, 1939 and raised in Hartford, daughter to the late James and Cecelia (O’Malley) Kielty. She was a graduate of Mount St. Joseph Academy, continuing her education and earning her Bachelor’s degree in Teaching from Central CT State College. Prior to her retirement, Betty was a teacher for the Board of Education of Windsor for 35 years. As teaching was one of her passions, after her retirement, Betty volunteered at the Jubilee House of St. Augustine School, Hartford, where she taught English to immigrants from around the world. Betty also loved to read and travel. Two of her favorite destinations were Italy, where she spent a year, and Ireland, where she married her husband Tom in 1975. A longtime resident of Glastonbury, Betty was a member of a local book club as well as a faithful communicant of St. Paul Church.

Betty will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by her loving family; a daughter Siobhan M. Griffin of Dingle, County Kerry, Ireland; a sister, Sheila Perretta of Avon; two nephews and a niece on her side of the family, James T. Perretta (Jeannie) of Glastonbury, Daniel J. Perretta (Gayle Clark) of West Hartford and Beth P. Krane (Jordan) of Glastonbury, and a great niece and two great nephews, Angelina Perretta, Aidan Krane and Ryan Krane; three sisters-in-law, Eileen Dowd of East Hartford, Siobhan Sullivan (Michael) of West Hartford and Peig Conneely of Ireland as well as a large extended family of nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews on the Griffin side of the family.

Relatives and friends may pay their respects Monday morning April 23, 2018 from 9:15-10:15am at the Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, 50 Naubuc Avenue, Glastonbury, with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrating Betty’s life at 11am in St. Augustine Church of St. Isadore & Maria Parish, 55 Hopewell Rd., South Glastonbury. Interment next to Tom will follow the Mass in Holy Cross Cemetery (Section 2), 17 Wickham Rd., corner of Hebron Avenue, Glastonbury. The family requests in lieu of flowers that memorial donations be made in Betty’s name to St. Francis Hospital Foundation, Palliative Care Unit, 95 Woodland St., 2nd floor, Hartford, CT 06105.
