Obituary for Elizabeth M. Burns

Elizabeth M. Burns
Sister Elizabeth “Betty” M. Burns, M.M., 84, of Wethersfield, went to her eternal rest on April 14, 2018, in St. Francis Hospital. She was born in Hartford on December 15, 1933, daughter of the late Perley G. and Elizabeth (Farrelly) Burns. Sr. Betty was a graduate of Saint Augustine School, Mount St. Joseph Academy and the St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing. She went on to obtain her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Boston College. In 1955, Sr. Betty answered her calling and joined the Maryknoll Sisters of St. Dominic and was assigned to Korea as a missionary. After spending 8 years in Korea, she returned home. At that time, Sr. Betty’s father had taken ill. An arrangement was made for her to escort 5 orphans under the age of 4 that had been adopted to the United States and place them with their new families. After doing so she was able to
remain in the area to care for her father. During this time Maryknoll provided a new mission opportunity for Sr. Betty allowing her to work in the public sector. Sr. Betty then was employed as an Inspector of Nursing Homes for the State of Connecticut, Department of Public Health. She rose through the DPH system and was the Chief of Staff for the Commissioner. After retirement from the DPH in 1999, Sr. Betty cared for her mother and Sister Pauline Gibbons, M.M., until their passing in 2005. At this time, until the present, Sr. Betty very happily worked with Father James Moran providing any help or service asked of her for the parishioners of The Church of the Incarnation in Wethersfield. She truly cherished her time of service with The Church of the Incarnation.
She is survived by her brothers, John Burns and his wife Pamela of Windsor, William Burns and his wife Patricia of Enfield and her sister Mary Ann Dixon of Windsor Locks. She also leaves seven nieces and nephews, Peter, Christopher and Billy Burns and Patricia, Donna, Robert and Daniel Dixon and numerous grand nieces and nephews.
Friends may call on Thursday, April 19, 2018, from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at the Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, 34 Beaver Rd., Wethersfield. A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating Sister Betty’s life will be held on Friday, April 20, 2018, at 10:00 AM in the Church of the Incarnation, 544 Prospect St., Wethersfield. All attendees are asked to go directly to the church. Burial will be in Mount St. Benedict Cemetery, 1 Cottage Grove Rd., Bloomfield. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Sr. Betty’s name may be made to the Maryknoll Sisters of St. Dominic, 10 Pinesbridge Rd., Ossining, NY 10562 or any charity of the donor’s choosing.
