Albina A. Ledwith (Zaranka)
Albina (Zaranka) Ledwith, 99, beloved wife of the late Philip J. Ledwith of Hartford, passed away November 16, 2017 at home with family at her side.
She was born in Ansonia, CT on August 30, 1918, daughter of the late Anthony and Eva (Tamalis) Zaranka and moved to Nanticoke, Pennsylvania near Scranton, at a very young age. After attending High School, Albina worked in numerous factories to take care of her mother and siblings. She was able to move her family back to CT to keep her brothers from having to work in the coal mines. She continued to work in factories to support her family, including Crystal Labs, Gray Manufacturing, and Peter Paul Candy as a Supervisor. She was a member of the ladies’ bowling league of Holy Trinity Church, attended many events at the Lithuanian club where she met her husband, Phil. She was married in Holy Trinity Church on August 21, 1948 and moved into the Frog Hollow area of Hartford. They eventually moved into their current home her husband Phil built in the Foster Heights area of Hartford. After staying at home to raise her children, she worked in retail at the Sage-Allen department store. Albina was a member of the St. Lawrence O’Toole Rosary Altar Society, the Batchelder School PTA, and the South Catholic Parent’s Association. She also enjoyed activities with the Hannon-Hatch VFW Auxilliary and American Legion Auxilliary. Along with Phil, she helped organize and chair the annual Frog Hollow Dances for many years that benefitted Camp Courant. Binnie was an avid baker, and well known for her butter and toll house cookies. She took advanced cake decorating classes and enjoyed making many beautiful themed cakes for family and neighborhood gatherings. She loved animals and donated to many animal charities. After retiring, she and Phil spent 20 winters in Deerfield Beach, Florida with many local Hartford area friends. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family and grandchildren. The family also would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Binnie's angels Diana and Verona for their wonderful care. Albina leaves her daughter, Linda Ledwith of Nags Head, North Carolina, her son, Philip Ledwith and his wife Kathleen of Old Saybrook and three grandchildren she adored, Kelly, Kristy, and Philip Max all of Old Saybrook, a sister Regina Jackmauh of East Windsor, several nieces and nephews and her beloved cat Gwendolyn. She was predeceased by her brothers, Joseph Zaranka and Anthony Zaranka.
