Henry R. Schoebel, 95, of Peabody, MA formerly of Glastonbury, CT, loving husband to the late Jeanne (Kiley) Schoebel, entered the Lord’s embrace Monday, August 28, 2017. Henry was born in Elmhurst, NY, June 12, 1922, son of the late Henry and Agnes (Diebold) Schoebel. He graduated from Tusculum College, Greeneville, TN in 1947, after postponing his studies for two years to serve in the U.S. Army as an aircraft plotter in the South Pacific during World War II. He rose to the rank of Sergeant. Henry earned his Master of Arts in Education at Columbia Teachers College, NY. Henry’s long and distinguished educational career began in 1948 as a social studies teacher at Melverne (NY) High School advancing to the position of Assistant to the Principal in 1954. In 1958 Henry became the Principal of Glastonbury (CT) High School beginning a notable career of advancing the reputation of the school system throughout the State of CT. In 1963, he was named Director of Secondary Education and in 1966 he advanced to Assistant Superintendent of Glastonbury Schools. Henry then became Acting Superintendent of Schools in 1980 and his career culminated in his appointment to Superintendent of Schools in 1981. He held that position until his retirement in 1985. Henry was a long time communicant and usher at St. Paul Catholic Church, Glastonbury. Post-retirement he gave of his many talents in voluntary service to Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Hartford and the St. Vincent DePaul Society.

Henry will be dearly missed by his loving family, three sons, Henry L. Schoebel of AZ, William J. Schoebel of FL, Richard K. Schoebel and his wife Meredith (Nix), of CA, four daughters, Ellen S. Hansen and her husband Mitchell, of RI, Jeanne S. Holihan and her husband Leo, of OH, Marie L. Sands and her husband Doug, of N.H., and Lisa A. Bean of FL; seventeen cherished grandchildren, Christopher Foster, Caitlin Hansen and her husband Wyatt Matthews, Emily Hansen and her husband Daniel McGovern, Michaela and Susanne Hansen, Paul and Amy Holihan, Russell, Kevin, Eric and Brian Sands, Crystal, Timothy, Patrick and Kiley Bean and Ki and Jack Schoebel and two great-grandchildren, Greta Matthews and Destin Bean. He was predeceased by his daughter Nancy Jeanne Schoebel-Foster, two sisters Agnes Costigan and Alice Mineur and his brother John Schoebel.

Friends and relatives may call on the family, Friday, September 8, 2017 between 5-7pm at the Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, 50 Naubuc Ave, Glastonbury. A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating Henry’s life will be held Saturday, September 9th at 10am in St. Paul Church, of SS Isidore and Maria Parish, 2577 Main St, Glastonbury (Attendees are asked to go directly to the church). Burial will follow in Green Cemetery, Hubbard St., Glastonbury.
