Obituary for Wallace Calvin "The Wall" Cone

Wallace Calvin "The Wall" Cone
Wallace C. Cone, Jr. 63, of Rocky Hill, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family. Affectionately known as “The Wall”, he grew up in Hartford, attending St. Joseph’s School and serving as an altar boy at the Cathedral. In true Irish fashion, when not serving God, Wally could be found stealing cement tubs from construction sites and floating down the Hog River or taking his mother’s car from the Aetna without her knowledge to take joy rides with his friends. Moving to Rocky Hill in 1969, Wally met the love of his life, Debbie. Officially beginning their courtship in their Junior year of high school, Debbie and Wally spent 44 incredible years together, sharing good times and bad, but always supporting each other. Wally joined the ranks of the Rocky Hill Police Department in 1974 and served proudly for 26 years rising from Dispatcher to Detective. Throughout his career, Wally received countless awards for his heroism, bravery, and diligence. Wally was tasked to the Connecticut State Police, serving with the Statewide Narcotics Task Force. Wally considered this the turning point in his law enforcement career, finding his niche as a narcotics officer. Returning from that detail, Wally worked with regional gang task forces and eventually worked with brother officers in surrounding agencies to create the Central Connecticut Drug Task Force. While stern and tough, Wally was also fair. More than one story has been told where suspects eventually thanked him for being fair and honest with them. Most importantly, throughout his career, Wally met and befriended wonderful people who have supported him throughout his life. His brother officers from various agencies have been by his side since they met and have always been there to lend a hand throughout his battle with cancer. Wally retired from the RHPD in 2000 and returned to service for the community immediately as the town’s first Information Technology coordinator, finally retiring for good in 2017 after serving 43 proud years for the Town of Rocky Hill. In 2006 Wally became a member of the Irish American Home Society in Glastonbury where he served on various committees and volunteered countless hours to celebrate his Irish heritage. Throughout his battle with cancer, friends like Jim and Joanne McKinnon, Bob Valente, Rich Renstrom, and countless others, have also been by his side. The consummate family man, Wally instilled a sense of pride and duty to others in his son, Patrick, who has committed himself to carrying on his father’s legacy for helping others as an educator. Wally’s biggest source of pride is his family, wife Debbie, son Patrick and his wife Amy, and grandson William. He credits Amy with saving his life when he was struggling after his heart surgery. Wally loved spending time with family and friends all over the area. He especially enjoyed trips to New York City, Yankee Stadium, and most of all, he loved spending long summer days at Cape Cod. Wally’s clam chowda made with freshly caught sea clams is unrivaled. Wally loved his family with all of his heart. He was most proud of his wife who stood by his side through his arduous health battles. He often spoke to others of her incredible strength. Wally leaves behind an incredible legacy of service to the community and commitment to family. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be missed by all, especially his family and close family friends the McKinnons. He is survived by his wife Debbie, son Patrick and his wife Amy, and grandson William of Rocky Hill, CT, as well as his Uncle Arnie and Aunt Linda Cone of Agawam Mass. Wally was predeceased by his parents, Wallace, Sr. and Grace Cone. The family would like to thank all who supported them through this time, especially Sgt. Jeffrey Foss-Rugan of the Rocky Hill Police and the folks from Hartford Healthcare at Home Hospice Care. Calling hours will be on Wednesday, June 21, 2017 from 4:00PM-8:00PM at Farley Sullivan Funeral Home, 34 Beaver Road in Wethersfield, CT. The funeral will be held Thursday June 22, 2017 at 9:15 am from the funeral home with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrating Wally’s life at 10:00 am in St. James Church, 767 Elm St. Rocky Hill.
