Obituary for John Kowalchyn

John Kowalchyn, 90, of Hartford, peacefully passed away Saturday, May 20, 2017 at Connecticut Hospice in Branford. John was born in Ukraine March 2, 1927. He immigrated to the United States from Germany at the end of 1949 and resided in Hartford for over 50 years. John was a Veteran of the Korean War serving as a Medic with a Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (MASH) Unit. He obtained his training as a Medical Technician in the Field Service School at the Brooke Army Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston, TX. He was honorably discharged in 1953 and then served 5 years in the United States Army Reserves. John was a longtime member of St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, Hartford, the Ukrainian National Home, the Ukrainian Congress Committee of American and ODFFU. He worked for 30 years in several manufacturing companies, but due to his heart condition he retired early when he was only 56 years old. After successfully recovering from his first angioplasty and two open heart surgeries, John’s heart condition improved where he could enjoy long walks, aerobic exercises and the most important and pleasurable activity of gardening. John will be remembered by his family, Nadia (Chechkevich) Panachyd of Hartford; Julian Panachyd of Hartford and Brooklyn, NY; as well as many dear friends. John was predeceased by Illya Panachyd and godson, Jack Myron Panachyd. Friends and relatives may call on the family Tuesday, May 23, 2017 from 5-7pm at the Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, 34 Beaver Rd., Wethersfield with a Panachyda service at 6:30pm. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, May 24th at 10am in St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, 135 Wethersfield Ave. Hartford. Interment will follow the liturgy in St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery, New London Tpke, Glastonbury. At John’s request, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested to a charity of the donor’s choice. To extend online condolences and/or share a memory, please visit farleysullivan.com.
