Obituary for Edward W. Gilbert

Edward W.  Gilbert
Edward W. Gilbert, 96, of Wethersfield, husband of the late Marjorie (McGee) Gilbert for 68 years, passed away peacefully on October 27, 2016 at home with his family by his side. He was born in Wethersfield on June 5, 1920 to Mary (Horan) and Samuel W. Gilbert. Ed was a lifelong resident of Wethersfield, attending the Wethersfield School system, graduating in 1939. He served in the US Army in WWII in the South Pacific Theatre as an Amphibian Engineer for the 523rd Battalion. Returning home he married Marjorie in 1946 and was employed by General Building Supply of East Hartford, retiring in 1985. Ed generously volunteered for the Wethersfield Volunteer Ambulance Association from 1963-1979. He was a member and past president of American Legion Bourne-Keeney Post 23 for 67 Years. For his love of animals, Ed gave many hours to the Connecticut Humane Society in Newington.
He will be painfully missed by his two daughters and sons in law, Lynne Leonard and her husband Fred of East Hartford, Beth Graywolf and her husband Shane of Bloomfield and his two grandsons Shelby Osbeck of Wethersfield and Joseph Groll of East Hartford.
Friends may call from 10:00 -11:00am Wednesday November 2, 2016 at the Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, 34 Beaver Rd. Wethersfield. A Memorial Service celebrating Ed’s life will be held at 11:00 am in the funeral home. Burial with military honrs will follow in Rose Hill Memorial Park 580 Elm St. Rocky Hill. Ed’s family requests in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the Wethersfield Volunteer Ambulance Association, 206 Prospect St, Wethersfield, CT 06109.
