Obituary for Richard J. "Dick" Whitmore

Richard “Dick” J. Whitmore, 84, of Vernon, beloved husband of 63 years to the late Ethel M. (Topliff) Whitmore, passed away peacefully Tuesday, July 12, 2016 at home, surrounded by his family. Born in Hartford, son of the late Edward and Josephine (Mankus) Whitmore, he lived in the Vernon/Manchester area most of his adult life. Prior to his retirement, Dick was an Army Veteran, serving during the Korean Conflict and after which worked for many years as an Appliance Technician for the General Electric Co.
He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Club, and the Phillips Maine Senior Citizen Club, Dick and his wife Ethel loved vacationing at their home in Madrid Maine. He enjoyed numerous outdoor activities including fishing, hunting, and gardening. Most of all he enjoyed the company of his family. He was a proud American who loved his country and said, "It is a privilege to be able to fly the American flag."
Dick was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He leaves his two daughters and son in law, Teresa (Whitmore) Yester and her husband, Norman of Old Lyme, Elissa (Whitmore) McKenzie of Vernon, grandchildren Brendan W. Yester and his wife Christina of Manchester, Timothy N. Yester of Old Lyme, Curran M. McKenzie of Cromwell, Andrew R. McKenzie of Vernon, his great grandson Brendan W. Yester Jr. of Manchester and several nieces and nephews. Dick will also be greatly missed by his beloved dog, Shadow. He was predeceased by his brothers, Robert and Edward Whitmore.
Friends and relatives may pay their respects to the family on Monday, July 18th, 2016 from 9:30 to 10:30am at the Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, 34 Beaver Rd. Wethersfield. A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating Dick's life will follow at 11:30pm at St. Bartholomew's Church, 45 Ludlow Road, East, Manchester CT. Interment will follow at St. James Cemetery, Broad St. Manchester. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Lance Corporal Nolan P.
