Robert R. Vance, Jr, 83, of Glastonbury went to his Lord April 29, 2010. He died unexpectedly but peacefully in his sleep after a lifetime of excellent health. He is survived by his three children, Michael & Liz Vance of Ithaca, NY, their three children, Tyler, Jonathan and Dylan, and a great grandson, Miles; his daughters, Susan S. Vance of Ithaca, NY, Holly Vance & Rodney Thomson of Ithaca, NY.; granddaughter, Corinne Everhart; his beloved ex-wife Carole Vance of Uncasville; nieces and nephews; and college friends of sixty years. Robert was born Feb. 5, 1927 in Columbus, Ohio. Upon graduating from Asheville School for boys in North Carolina, he earned a BA. from Amherst College and later an MBA from Columbia University. He recently completed all course work for his Doctorate in Education. At age nineteen Bob earned his pilot’s license and later served proudly in the US Army stationed in China. Bob enjoyed life in this world at a time when a brilliant mind and honest spirit could soar. Upon graduating from college, he became part owner of the Tahoe Biltmore Hotel in Lake Tahoe, Nevada. He engaged in many businesses over the years, including an advertising agency in NYC during the “50's, a computer programming school, a home mortgage company, and at the time of his death was engaged in a new enterprise; Vance Communications. During the past ten years, Bob was an inspiration and guiding force at Bella Victoria, a curio shoppe located in East Hampton, CT. Robert remained erudite and robust until his last day. His is as strong spirit, generous to a fault, admired and respected by many for impeccable manners and wise counsel. He was the main support of many souls and will be sorely missed. A celebration of Robert's life will be held Friday May 7, 2010 at 11am at the Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, 50 Naubuc Avenue, Glastonbury. His family will receive relatives and friends at the funeral home Friday morning prior to the service from 10-11am. Inurnment will be at home with his children.
