George C. Griffin Jr., 90, of Johnston, RI, formerly of Wethersfield, beloved husband of the late Anne F. (Richards) Griffin, passed away peacefully, Tuesday, May 15, 2012 in Providence, RI. Born July 7, 1921, and raised in Boston, George was the son of the late George C. Sr. and Alice (Gomez) Griffin. He was a graduate of Boston English H.S. Class of 1938, continuing his education at Boston College, where he earned a Masters Degree in Social Work, graduating in 1952. He married his wife Anne in 1952, at which time he began a career in Social Work at the Veteran’s Administration in Bridgeport from 1952-1956. In the same year he left the VA to begin a new career with the State of Connecticut, working in the Department of Adult Probation as a Senior Probate Officer from 1956-1970, then for the Training Office from 1970-1971, ultimately becoming the Deputy Director of Adult Probation until his retirement in April of 1988. George was a member of the National Council of Crime and Delinquency, along with being a founding member of the CT Probation and Parole Association (CPPA). In between hi s graduating high school and entering college, George served our country in the United States Army Air Force with the “Earthquakers”, 12th Bomb Group, 82nd Bomb Squadron on a B-25 Aircraft in Rome-Arno, Naples-Foggia, China-Burma-India, Antal Burma. He received a Good Conduct Medal, and the WWII Victory Medal. Prior to moving to Rhode Island with his daughter two years ago, George, Anne and their children resided in Wethersfield for forty years, where he was a member of the Church of the Incarnation, serving the church community as a Eucharistic Minister and a Commentator. George will be fondly remembered by his family; two sons, Gregory Griffin of Enfield, David Griffin of San Diego, CA; a daughter, Anne Marie Griffin, of Johnston, RI; Daughter-in-law, Carol Griffin; a brother, Richard Griffin; sister, Francis Sorgi; three grandchildren, Gregory Griffin Jr., Sean Griffin, and Andrea Griffin; along with many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grand nephews; as well as many close and dear friends. In addition to his parents, George was predeceased by a brother, Thomas Griffin, and a sister Catherine Griffin. Friends and relatives may pay their respects Friday, May 18, 2012 from 4-7pm at the Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, 34 Beaver Rd., Wethersfield. Funeral procession from Farley-Sullivan, will be Saturday, May 19, at 10:15am, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11am in the Church of the Incarnation, 544 Prospect St., Wethersfield, followed by interment in Village Cemetery, Marsh St., Old Wethersfield.
