Daniel E. Holland Jr., Esquire, 87, a longtime resident of Wethersfield, beloved husband of Virginia Hale (Cowles) Holland, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 21, 2011. Dan was born in New Haven, CT on September 29, 1924, son of the late Daniel E. Holland Sr. and Ruth (MacPhee) Holland. He graduated from Hall High School in West Hartford, CT, Class of 1942. Dan then went to serve his country in the United States Army during World War II with the 106th Infantry Division, 424 Infantry Regiment, Cannon Company, where he fought at Winterspelt and St. Vith during the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944. Upon his Honorable Discharge from the military, Dan attended Colgate University, graduating in 1950, and then went on to Cornell Law School, where he attained his LL.B in 1953. Dan practiced law in Connecticut for over 50 years, beginning with the Hartford, CT law firm of Schatz & Schatz, where he became a partner and worked for 20 years, and then as the head of his own firm in Rocky Hill, CT for 30 years. He also served as the Town Attorney for Rocky Hill for many years. Dan was a member of the Hartford County and Connecticut Bar Associations, a member of the Disabled American Veterans, a longtime member and past President of the Wethersfield Country Club, a member and past President of the Wethersfield Exchange Club, and an active member of the Wethersfield Republican Party, including service on the Wethersfield Republican Town Committee. He found time for other passions as an avid sailor, golfer, and skier. Along with his wife, Virginia, Dan will be fondly remembered by his loving family: five sons, Mark Holland and his wife Diane, of Harrison, NY, Daniel E. Holland III & his wife Deborah, of Sherborn, MA, Paul J. Holland & his wife Elisa, of Leesburg VA, John C. Holland & Sarah Benjamin of Truro, MA, Peter M. Holland & his wife Kristine, of West Hartford, CT; three sisters, Eleanor “Holly” Clancy of Wethersfield, CT, Lorene Spencer of Grand Rapids, MI, Ruth Ann Kulak & her husband Harry, of Apex, NC; nine adoring grandchildren, Daniel IV, Ryan, Sarah, Peter, Jack, James, John, Nora, & Andrew; three step daughters and their spouses, Kathleen & Patrick Sullivan of Bloomfield, CT, Elizabeth & Michael Dooley of Laurel, MD, Susan & Kenneth Greco of Bloomfield, CT; his step son Jonathan Cowles & his wife Lisa, of Manchester, CT; nine step grandchildren, Christopher, Kevin, Sean, Cara, & Ryan Dooley, Alicia Dondi, and Sarah & David Cowles; and many nieces and nephews. The Holland family will receive relatives and friends on Friday, November 25th from 4-7pm at the Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, 34 Beaver Rd., Wethersfield. A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating Dan’s life will be held Saturday, November 26th at 10am in Corpus Christi Church, 601 Silas Deane Highway, Wethersfield (all attending are asked to go directly to Church). Interment will follow the mass with full military honors in Mount St. Benedict Cemetery (Section, M-Extension), 1 Cottage Grove Rd., Bloomfield.
