Francisco (Frank) Fernandes, 87, of Rocky Hill and formerly of Wethersfield and Hartford, beloved husband of 50 years of the late Maria Piedade (Minas) Fernandes passed away at Hartford Hospital on Sunday, August 28, 2011. Frank came to Hartford in 1955 from Sandomil, Portugal and worked some 30 years on the roads and highways of Connecticut while employed by White Oak Construction of Plainville, CT. He loved being outdoors and filled his off time and retirement from the Connecticut Laborers Union with gardening and yard work. He loved showing his grandchildren how his garden grew and generously shared his fruits and vegetables with family and friends. Frank is survived by his son Carlos Fernandes and his wife Julie of Glastonbury and his son Antonio Fernandes and his wife Karen of South Windsor; grandsons Michael Fernandes of Glastonbury, James Fernandes and his wife Melissa of Raleigh, NC, granddaughters Tiffani Djiounas and her husband Ben of New York, NY, Lynn Fernandes and her husband Giacomo Bacci of New York, NY and Lindsay Hauze and her husband Bill of Vernon, CT. He is also survived by his great granddaughter Isabel Grace Djiounas of NY. Frank leaves his sister-in-law Piedade Fernandes of West Hartford, sister-in-law Maria Martins and her husband Jose of Sebastian, Fl, sisters-in-law Helena Fernandes and Aurora Fernandes of Portugal many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his four brothers Antonio, Henrique and Eduardo Fernandes all of Portugal and his brother Jose Fernandes of West Hartford. Frank’s family would like to thank the residents and staff at Emeritus of Rocky Hill, CT for their loving care and concern during his time with them. Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 1, 2011 at 9am from The Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, 34 Beaver Rd., Wethersfield, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10am in The Church of The Incarnation, Prospect St., Wethersfield. Interment will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery. Friends may call on the family Wednesday, August 31, 2011 from 5-8 pm at the funeral home.
