Dorothy Joyce Peterson, born September 26, 1921, 89 years young passed away peacefully Tuesday June 14, 2011 after a long illness. She had a long fruitful life having raised seven children, sons, Knute & Michele Peterson, of Bloomfield, CT, John & Patricia Peterson of Easton, MA, David & Kathleen Peterson of Bedford, NH, Charles M. Peterson of Rocky Hill, CT, Edward & Margaret Peterson of Manchester, CT, Christopher & Theresa Peterson of Colchester, CT and a daughter Agnes and her husband Mathew Winalski of Vero Beach, Florida. Besides her children, Dot leaves this world survived by thirteen grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Predeceased by her loving husband, Knute S. Peterson, Sr., a retired Hartford Fire Department Superintendent of Alarm, after forty-nine years of marriage and retiring to Belfast, Maine. Dorothy was born and raised in Hartford and is survived by three sisters, Rosemary Bouchard, Francis Henry and Ann Ryther who reside out of State. She enjoyed a ten year career with the State of CT Health Dept. serving as Assistant to the Director. Dot was actively involved in Our Lady of Sorrows parish activities and was responsible for forming the Parkville Community Center. Having married during WWII Dorothy worked at the veteran’s home in Newington till the war was over and proceeded to raise her family on Prospect Avenue in Hartford after a brief residence in Wethersfield. Dorothy came from a strict and Irish upbringing with her father John Joyce being a Hartford Police Officer; she would always refer to her Irish Heritage. Dorothy lived with honesty and integrity. Her strength from her Irish roots reflected in her strong personality. When Dorothy spoke she would definitely make you listen and think, never holding back saying exactly what she was thinking. Dot was intelligent, a survivor and tough. Love of her church to always give back, loved her family and friends, and missed her husband Knute S. Peterson, Sr. who left us too young. Her choice to stay in Maine after his death, a place the two of them loved. Dorothy lived her life exactly the way she chose to live. A beautiful and loving person that will be missed by many. The hearts and hugs and mostly those words that really did make you think was that “wit” or “wisdom”. As the Irish say, “Blessed are the children and grandchildren that shared in the family traditions, the gifts of love and quality called “The Family Roots” are forever treasured. Remembering it takes a strong woman called Mother to keep the strength of a tree forever growing ”Dorothy forever lives on in our hearts with love and integrity. We love you.
