Thomas P. Hanley, 83, of Wethersfield, passed away on February 13, 2011, at Hartford Hospital. He was born in Hartford on July 31, 1927, son of the late Michael and Mary (Carroll) Hanley. Tom was the beloved husband of Lillian (Coughlin) Hanley, the love of his life, to whom he was married for 54 joyful years. Tom resided in Wethersfield since 1956. He attended Immaculate Conception Grammar School in Hartford and was a 1945 graduate of Hartford High School. He served with the U.S. Merchant Marine from April 1945 to July 1947. After attending the University of Connecticut College of Insurance, Tom spent over 40 years working in the insurance industry in Connecticut, including the Phoenix Fire Insurance Company for 13 years, and Aetna Life & Casualty Company for 30 years until his retirement in 1990. Tom was an active member of the Holy Family Monastery Retreat League for 35 years and served as a devoted CCD teacher for many years at both Sacred Heart Church and the Church of the Incarnation in Wethersfield, where he also was a communicant. Tom was a voracious reader who relished sharing stories and especially a good laugh. His keen wit, powerful faith and positive spirit kept those around him smiling, particularly his family, to whom his devotion was paramount. Besides his wife, Tom is survived by his cherished children, Maryann Lindquist and her husband Jeffrey of Wethersfield, Kathleen Hanley of Newington, and Thomas P. Hanley, Jr. of New York NY; his nieces and nephews, Michael J. Hanley and his wife Mary Ann of Hebron, Patricia A. Pekarski and her husband David of Hebron, Robert Belfiore and his wife Deborah of Simsbury, and Jim Belfiore's wife, Janice; his sister-in-law Eileen C. Burnham of East Hartford and her children, Maureen A. Rodgers and Patricia E. Rodgers, both of East Hartford, and Gigi Tappan and her husband Stanford of Marshfield, MA; his precious grandchildren and lights of his life, Danielle E. and Kerry M. Lindquist; and his many grand nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother James, his sister Anne, and his nephew Jim Belfiore. Tom’s family wishes to thank the caring staff of Hartford Hospital Center 10. Tom also was, and his family remains, immeasurably grateful for the gift of a new heart, which he received as a transplant patient 19 years ago. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 17, 2011, commencing at 9 a.m. from the Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, 34 Beaver Road, Wethersfield, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating Tom's life at 10 a.m. in the Church of the Incarnation, 544 Prospect Street, Wethersfield. Interment will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery, 453 Fairfield Avenue, Hartford. Tom’s family will receive relatives and friends in the Funeral Home, Wednesday, February 16 from 5 -8 p.m. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made in Tom’s name to the American Heart Association or the Wethersfield Library Endowment Fund.
