Reverend Father Herbert James Clarkin, 79, of West Hartford, passed away peacefully Wednesday, December 29, 2010 at St. Mary Home. Born, January 15, 1931 in Waterbury, he was the son of the late Francis and Helen (Mays) Clarkin. Father Clarkin was raised in Waterbury, attended and graduated from the following schools, universities, and seminaries, the Russell School, and Crosby High School, Waterbury; Fairfield University, St. Thomas Seminary, Bloomfield, and St. Mary’s Seminary, Baltimore, MD. He was ordained May 7, 1959, by the Most Reverend John F. Hackett, at St. Lawrence O’Toole Church, Hartford. Father Clarkin served the Archdiocese of Hartford for 50 years in many parishes and schools, to include the following assignments, St. Michael Church, Beacon Falls, St. Paul Church, Glastonbury, East Catholic High School, Manchester, Mount St. Joseph Academy, West Hartford, Immaculate Conception Church, Waterbury, St. Bernard Church, Tariffville, and St. Mary Home, West Hartford. Father Clarkin will be remembered by his family; two nephews and their spouses, John and Ruth Lane of Oakville, and Attorney William P. and Rosemary Lane of Goshen; two nieces and their spouses, Mary and Michael Layton of North Swanzey, New Hampshire, and Susan and Richard Rollinson of Shelton; a cousin Catherine Martinelli of Woodbury; along with several grand nieces and grand nephews. Father Clarkin’s family will receive relatives and friends, Friday, December 31, 2010 from 10 – 11am at the Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, 34 Beaver Road, Wethersfield. A graveside service will be held at 12:00 noon in St. Joseph Cemetery (Old), Section D, at the corner of Silver and Hamilton Streets, Waterbury. At the request of the family, in lieu of flowers and that memorial donations may be made in Father Clarkin’s name to St. Bernard Church Parish, 7 Maple Street, P.O. Box 85, Tariffville, CT 06081.
