Joseph F. Guthrie, 89 of Southington, beloved husband of Bernice “Be” (LeBlanc) Guthrie entered into the Lord’s embrace Monday, September 27, 2010 at home, with his loving family by his side. Born in Springfield, MA, September 20, 1921, he was the son of the late Thomas and Mary (Meskill) Guthrie, he resided in the Hartford area most of his life. After attending Bulkeley High School, Joe enlisted in the U.S. Navy, attained the rank of Gunner’s Mate 3rd Class, serving aboard the USS LST 820, in the Pacific Theater. When he returned home, Joe met “Be”; they married, started their family, and raised their two sons in Hartford. In addition to serving his country, Joe served his community as a Hartford Firefighter, rising through the ranks, he attained the position of Captain. An active man, Joe was a member of the Hartford Firefighter’s Emerald Society, the Firemen’s Benevolent Society, Firefighter Protective Society, the Firefighters’ Retiree’s Assoc, VFW Post 2097, the Neutral Corner Boxing Assoc, and the CT. Boxing Guild. Along with his wife, Joe will be fondly remembered by his sons and their wives, Kevin & Roberta Guthrie of East Longmeadow, MA, Michael & Leslie Guthrie of Rockport, MA; his adoring grandchildren, Ryan and Brendan Guthrie. In addition to his parents, Joe was predeceased by his five sisters, Madeline, Kay, Mary, Peggy, and Patricia as well as his four brothers, Harry, James, John and Thomas. Funeral procession will be Friday, October 1, 2010 at 10:30am from the Farley Sullivan Funeral Home, 34 Beaver Rd, Wethersfield, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrating Joe’s life, at 11:30am in St. Augustine Church, 10 Campfield Ave, Hartford. Interment will follow at Mount. St. Benedict Cemetery, 1 Cottage Grove Rd, Bloomfield. Joe’s family will receive friends and relatives at the Funeral Home, Thursday, September 30 from 4 to 7pm. Memorial donations may be made in Joe’s name to the VNA Hospice of Central Connecticut, 56 West Main St., Plainville, CT 06062.
