James M. Coughlin, 86, of Wethersfield, passed away on Saturday March 20, 2010 at Saint Francis Hospital. He was born in Hartford on May 19, 1923, son of the late Martin J. and Maryanne (Flannery) Coughliln. Jim was the beloved husband of the late Jacqueline (McNally) Coughlin. Jim was predeceased by his brother Gerald in 1954. He resided in Wethersfield since 1971. Jim was a 1941 graduate of Bulkeley High School. During World War II, he served 37 months in the 1st Marine Division in the Pacific Theatre of Operations in the campaigns of Peleliu and Okinawa and also saw duty in China. Jim was a 1950 graduate of Providence College where he was Vice President of the senior class, a member of the Friars Club and later a member of Providence College Alumni Association. Jim spent over 30 years working for the State of Connecticut, Department of Adult Probation, as a District Manager,
retiring in 1986. He was an active member of the Connecticut Probation and Parole Association, New England Council on Crime and Delinquency, along with the National Institute of Crime and Delinquency. Jim was also a life member of the Knights of Columbus (Fourth Degree), Hartford Council, a lifetime member of the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks, Hartford Lodge 19, past President of St. Lawrence O’Toole Holy Name Society, former Chairman of the State Executive Board of Young Democrats, past President of the Hartford Young Democratic Club, Catholic Graduates Club of Greater Hartford, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the American Legion. A life member of the Irish American Home Society, he was very proud of his Irish heritage. Jim was also a communicant and devoted volunteer of the Church of the Incarnation, Wethersfield. Jim is survived by his sisters, Eileen C. Burnham of East Hartford, and Lillian C. Hanley and her husband Thomas of Wethersfield; his loving nieces and nephews, Maureen A. Rodgers and Patricia E. Rodgers, both of East Hartford, Thomas F. Kane and his wife Judith of Berkeley Heights, NJ, Gigi Tappan and her husband Stanford of Marshfield, MA, Patricia K. White and her husband James of Hanover, MA, Maryanne Lindquist and her husband Jeff of Wethersfield, Gregory J. Kane and his wife Deborah of Walpole, MA, Kathleen Hanley of Newington, Thomas P. Hanley of New York, NY, and Scott W. Kane and his wife Nancy of Medfield, MA. Jim’s family wishes to thank Teresa for all the support she has provided to him. Some of his happiest memories were spent with his wife at the cottage at Englewood Beach, West Yarmouth, MA. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, March 24, 2010, commencing at 9:00am from the Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, 34 Beaver Road, Wethersfield, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating Jim’s life at 10:00am in the Church of the Incarnation, 544 Prospect Street, Wethersfield. Interment will follow in Village Cemetery, Marsh Street, Wethersfield. Jim’s family will receive relatives and friends in the Funeral Home, Tuesday March 23 from 4-8pm. The family requests in lieu of flowers, that memorial donations be made in Jim’s name to the Church of the Incarnation.
