Maria I. (Clementino) Fazio 92, died on February 16, 2010. She was the daughter of the late Antonio and Alesandrina Clementino of Hartford; and the wife of the late Salvatore J. Fazio of Glastonbury. Maria was born September 14, 1917 in Hartford and attended Hartford public schools; she graduated from The St. Francis School of Nursing in 1938. Upon her graduation, Maria, her sister, Macrina, and their good friend Miga, borrowed Maria’s father’s Model T Ford and they drove to Mexico for a celebration. Maria enlisted into the Army Nurse Corps, September 27, 1944 and served until January 2, 1946. She was stationed at the 221st General Hospital in France during WWII. She and Sal married June 7, 1945 in the hospital chapel. Maria was awarded the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and the WWII Victory Medal for her service and was discharged as a 1st Lt. Upon her return from Europe she and Sal lived in Bridgeport, moved to Cheshire and bought their first house in 1969 when they moved to Glastonbury. Maria always found time for volunteer work to include making rosary beads for the African Missionaries and as a member of the Federated Women’s Club of Glastonbury. She was a fantastic cook and homemaker. She loved red lipstick, champagne, sunny days on the water, the color pink and always knew her children better than they knew themselves. While teaching her children to cook, she would not let them throw out any of their failed attempts, instead she would doctor them up and serve them as if nothing had happened. Maria worked for many years as a nurse dedicating herself to exceptional care for all her patients in both the operating room and hospital. She was predeceased by her son Richard G. Fazio, her sister, Macrina Ciarleglio, brothers, Joseph, Valentino, Michael and George Clementino. She is survived by her four children John (Renita) Fazio of East Hampton, CT. Theresa (David) Carson of Southington, CT, Andria (Ray) Blanton of Aurora, CO, and Macrina (Duane) Fazio of Eagle River, AK. Maria is also survived by her brother James Clementino of East Hartford, and sister, Anita Russo of Bloomfield. She also leaves eight grandchildren, Michael Fazio, Eric, Sean, Mark, Alex, and Alicia Carson, and Tim and Melissa Leining; ten great grandchildren, Lexus, Michael Jr., and Anthony Fazio, Olivia and Jameson Carson, Ayanna Carson, Brian Cole, Riley Westcot, and Tyler and Jacey Leining along with several nieces and nephews in the Hartford and Bridgeport areas. Maria will be remembered for her strong faith, gentle soul, love of life, kindness, sense of humor and being a most generous person with a heart of gold. Mom collected angels for years and now she is our special angel. Funeral Procession from the Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home will be held Saturday February 20, 2010 at 9:00am, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am in St. Paul Church, 2577 Main Street, Glastonbury, CT 06033. Interment will be in Mount St. Benedict Cemetery, 1 Cottage Grove Road, Bloomfield, CT 06002. Maria’s family will receive relatives and friends at the Funeral Home Friday February 19, from 4-7pm. The family requests in lieu of flowers, that memorial donations be made in Maria’s name to Federated Women’s Club of Glastonbury, 60 Burtonwood Road, Hebron, CT 06248, or The Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation, 103 Old Iron Ore Road, Bloomfield, CT 06002, 860-243-5200.
